Safety Guide for Cargo Bikes

Why Safety Matters
Riding with kids is different. You’re not just responsible for yourself, you’re responsible for everyone and the whole experience. Riders and passengers need to work together to make sure everyone is safe.
Helmets First
Always wear helmets, for you and your kids. Make sure:
- They fit properly
- Straps are secure.
- Kids keep them on for the full ride.
Riding and Turning
- Ride at a steady, comfortable pace.
- Slow down before turns.
- Take corners wide and smooth.
- Avoid sudden movements — especially with kids onboard.
- On sharper turns, especially with heavier loads, it’s often easier to slow down fully or step off the bike and guide it through the turn.
2 Wheels vs 3 Wheels Handling
2-wheel cargo bikes lean naturally into turns, like a normal bicycle. 3-wheel bikes handle differently: they don’t lean
- Turns need to be taken slower.
- Uneven ground can affect balance.
- They are more prone to tipping if handled poorly, especially on turns or uneven surfaces.
3 wheels require more attention, particularly when cornering or riding over uneven ground. For sharp turns, riders of 3-wheel bikes can step off and turn the bike by the frame. It’s often easier to control this way, even with a full load in the cargo area.
Stopping and Braking
- Start braking early.
- Start with the rear brake, then use both brakes if needed, making sure you brake smoothly.
- Avoid sudden stops when possible.
- Always slow down before intersections, crossings, or crowded areas.
Weight and Load
- Respect the bike’s weight capacity.
- Distribute weight evenly.
- Don’t overload the front or one side.
- A balanced bike is easier and safer to control.
Kids in the Basket
Kids should sit properly at all times. Make sure:
- Kids are not on their own in the cargo area
- They are seated, not standing
- Safety belts (if available) are used
- They don’t lean too far out Movement affects balance, especially at low speeds or when standing.
No Standing Pedal (Important)
Avoid standing up to pedal. Standing shifts your weight suddenly and affects the bike’s balance, especially with kids onboard. It increases the risk of losing control or tipping. Stay seated and pedal smoothly. If you feel unsure or need more control, slow down, step off the bike then walk and guide it . On electric models, use walking assist to help move the bike safely when needed.
Phones and Distractions
- No phones while riding.
- Stay focused on the road, your surroundings, and your kids.
- Even small distractions can make a big difference.
Ride Calm, Ride Together
- You don’t need to rush.
- Ride slower.
- Stay aware.
- Enjoy the journey. Because when it feels calm, it’s safer — and better for everyone.
